Mediterranean Local Agenda 21 Conference 1995 – Rome, Italy

The Mediterranean Local Agenda 21 Conference was held in Rome, Italy, from 22-24 November 1995. It was the City of Rome's contribution to the European Sustainable Cities & Towns Campaign, co-organised by the City of Rome, Ecomed and ICLEI's International Training Centre and in cooperation with the City of Barcelona and others.

The conference aimed to initiate an exchange of ideas and experiences between the cities of the Mediterranean region in order to encourage sustainable development and Agenda 21 processes at local level. The conference programme comprised theme sessions on local strategies towards sustainability, on how to resolve problems by negotiating outwards, and on how to create local action plans.

93 local and regional authorities from 21 countries participated in the conference, and 57 Mayors were present. The 'Mediterranean Cities' and Towns' Call for Action', was presented at the Euro-Mediterranean Conference in November 1995 in Barcelona, was adopted at the end of the Rome conference.
