European cities declare themselves as "Cities of Science"

For the first time cities from all over Europe confederate as “Cities of Science”. At the European Congress of Science Cities they sign a “Declaration of Magdeburg” and enforce thereby their interests to advance the structural change under the use of science and to make their cities sustainable.

All participants of the congress and all interested cities are invited cordially to discuss the previous details, to insert their suggestions and to align themselves with the arising network of the European Science Cities.

The „Declaration of Magdeburg“ takes up the ambitions of European cities to emerge long-ranging as creative and dynamic business and science locations. Therefor, the “Declaration of Magdeburg” comprehends concrete proposals and best practice examples. First of all, the declaration contains appendages for a better alliance between science and economy, an innovative marketing of cities, adapted structures of administration as well as the integration of regional and national supporters on the way to the city of the future.

Mainly, the involved European Cities call on the European Commission and the national governments to apprehend and to support the communes as connoting mover and interest group of science policy.

Hereby, you are invited to debate the draft. Write your comments and proposals directly to the congress manager Katja Proft at proft@mdkk.de.

Your suggestions will be seized and incorporated to the draft by the editorial group “Declaration of Magdeburg” at the European Congress of Science Cities. Dr. Klaus Puchta (Councillor of Economy of Magdeburg) is leading the editorial group that submits the “Declaration of Magdeburg” to all the participants of the congress for discussion. The final version will be handed over to a representative of the European Commission.
