TOOL :: CLIMATE COMPASS

Description of the initiative
CLIMATE COMPASS supports local authorities having committed themselves to get active in local climate protection in identifying first tangible measures and to implement them successfully in the short term. In addition, it provides the basis for a long-term and systematic engagement in climate change policies.

The result of CLIMATE COMPASS is an action programme, which includes first, simple measures for immediate implementation, lists necessary basic resolutions with criteria and minimum requirements to be applied in each climate relevant planning process, charts targets and strategies for a long-term climate change policy.

The central supporting tool is the “Compendium of Measures”, providing a basic structure for the selection of possible measures for the local climate action programme. Additional supports are the Recommended Measures (detailed description of measures which have proven to be simple to implement and, independent from framework conditions, promise success), case studies (to demonstrate the feasibility of the projects and measures chosen and to provide practical hints for implementation), and other “Resources”, providing tools, databases and other sources of information which will support local authorities in selecting and implementing the various elements of the local climate action programme.

Climate Alliance works on the establishment of a network of CLIMATE COMPASS promoters, who can assist local authorities to run the methodology.

TOOL :: AMICA (Adaptation and Mitigation – an Integrated Climate Policy Approach)

Description of the initiative

The European project AMICA is to develop local and regional strategies, which adopt a comprehensive approach to climate change. Climate policy should be an optimum blend of short- and long-term preventive and reactive measures, thus reducing future planning risks.

Achievements include the interregional exchange of experience, capacity building, effective and consolidated policy planning, awareness raising on climate change impacts in Europe, the involvement of a large number of municipalities in precautionary action related to climate change, and the creation of a specialised network on adaptation and mitigation.

TOOL :: ZOOM – Kids on the Move

Description of the initiative

ZOOM is a campaign on Sustainable Mobility and Climate Protection for young children aged 4 to 10 years. It consists of two parts:

-    In Green Footprints, the children receive a Green Footprint sticker each time they use an eco-friendly means of transport to and from school/kindergarten during an activity week. Each sticker - representing one kilometer for a symbolic trip around the world - they keep in a small sticker album.
-    The Hot Spots Expedition aims to explore children’s daily journeys. Equipped with questionnaires the children identify areas of concern (hot spots) in their surroundings like dangerous crossings, missing traffic-lights or pavements that are always blocked by parked cars. They develop solutions on their own to show clearly their vision of a child-friendly transport system that has a positive environmental impact, and is safer.

All materials needed to take part in the activities, including lesson plans; activity suggestions and free downloadable worksheets are available in seven EU languages (some parts in further languages).

TOOL :: Exhibition CLARITY (Climate Action Reaching and Teaching the Young)

The Climate Alliance exhibition CLARITY aims to inform young people aged between 12 and 18 about one of the most urgent environmental problems of our times. The CD-Rom allows teachers, authorities, agencies and environmental initiatives to make their own climate protection exhibitions at low cost. 17 exhibition boards that can be printed out from the CD-Rom provide an understanding of the fundamentals of climate change and clarify the links between climate change and human behaviour. The boards are supplemented by background information, further materials and suggestions for activities. The exhibition is available up to now in English, German, Italian, Spanish, Basque, Catalan and Slovenian. A French version is currently being prepared.

TOOL :: EXPO IMAGINE

Description of the initiative:

This international exhibition for the general public with 15 outstanding examples of intelligent energy management within our European territories. The objective of the exhibition is to launch “IMAGINE”, an exchange and foresight/prospective activity with the aim of inventing an energy future for European communities in 2030.

The exhibition will represent remarkable initiatives that have been developed over recent years. The objective of these initiatives is to significantly reduce the energy consumption of urban, rural and insular communities and maximise their supplies of renewable energy and reduce energy waste i.e. positive energy communities, “zero fossil fuel” towns, car free communities, autonomous islands, etc.

The exhibition is to be inaugurated on the 23rd November 2006, at the Royal Salt Works of Arc et Senans (France). It will also be possible to access the exhibition via the Internet from our Website in both English and French. Thereafter, it will go on tour in many European cities from January 2007.

TOOL :: Cities for climate Protection (CCP) Campaign

Description of the tool / initiative

The Reinforced Strategy for the CCP Campaign in Europe addresses climate protection through mitigation and adaptation measures. The Campaign provides a network and framework for action - engaging local governments to accelerate the integration of sustainability and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets into their decision-making and implementation processes. Through clear GHG reduction targets and a plan of action CCP participants can take effective steps in support of climate protection and also to improve community resilience against inevitable climate change.

Participation in the Campaign is open to all local authorities in Europe - the EU-25 region and beyond. The basic requirements are confirmed political commitment to climate protection, with a senior political representative (Mayor or Vice Mayor for the Environment) to sign the Reinforced Strategy document. Communication in the network is in English.
